[Cardano Founder Questions Vitalik: Opposing Lattice Cryptography Based Only on Analogies and Intuition, 10x Key Expansion Lacks Formulaic Basis] Foresight News reports that Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson tweeted that Vitalik Buterin, due to his excessive focus on hash-based cryptography research, is attempting to convince the industry that lattice cryptography is unreliable. The opposition to lattice cryptography is based solely on analogies to the General Number Field Sieve (GNFS), intuition about 'structures,' and a lack of formulaic support for key expansion factors, which have not been validated over the past decades. He pointed out that the GNFS complexity notation in Vitalik's post is incorrect; LLL, BKZ, and sieve methods have long been incorporated into the security parameter evaluations of ML-KEM and ML-DSA. Quantum attacks on ideal lattices have also not impacted these two lattice-based schemes. Hash functions similarly possess mathematical structures that can be studied and attacked—for instance, Poseidon employs low-degree polynomial mappings. Expanding keys by 10x lacks complexity formula support: constant improvements correspond to proportional adjustments in dimensions, not a fixed multiplication by 10. He further stated that in the context of growing concerns over 'steal now, decrypt later' threats, excessive skepticism toward deployed hybrid ML-KEM schemes could slow the migration to post-quantum cryptography, leaving more communication data vulnerable to future decryption by quantum computers. While he acknowledged the application value of hash-based signature schemes, he argued that they are unlikely to replace the common functionalities of elliptic curve cryptography.
