Is it trending in the English-speaking world lately to quit big AI companies and then post a series of essays about the threats of AI? I've already seen quite a few of these. A former AI safety researcher at OpenAI revealed that he, along with two other safety researchers, was fired by OpenAI last week. The reason given by the company? Mishandling sensitive information and overstepping procedures when communicating with external security organizations. They claim that while OpenAI talks about safety on the surface, in reality, it cares more about short-term interests. They would often engage with independent external security organizations to assess whether the new ChatGPT models posed any risks and whether the reasoning process could still be monitored. But the company took this as a sign of distrust, implying they might leak information. However, they insist they never disclosed any internal data, and all these communications were coordinated with their superiors and leadership. He said his firing feels like the company is making an example out of him to scare others. After his dismissal, the remaining employees might be even more afraid to speak up or collaborate with external experts, fearing they’ll also be targeted by the company.
