[U.S. Senator Blumenthal Investigates Relationship Between Cantor Fitzgerald and Tether]
According to a report by Golden Finance on October 8, citing CoinDesk, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, the Democratic lead member of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI), is investigating the relationship between stablecoin issuer Tether and Cantor Fitzgerald. He has sent a letter to Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Brandon Lutnick, requesting information about the relationship between the two companies, including details on the company's banking, sanctions, and anti-money laundering safeguards. The focus is on whether USDT has been used for illegal financial activities such as Iranian shadow banking or evading Russian sanctions.
This move follows the PSI staff report released on September 28, which analyzed 846 crypto wallets sanctioned or targeted for seizure due to their links to Iran and its proxies. The report found that 84% of these wallets transacted exclusively or almost exclusively in USDT. The report also stated that Cantor Fitzgerald holds a 5% equity stake in Tether and controls a significant portion of the company's over $100 billion in U.S. assets. Brandon Lutnick is the son of U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.
