[Forbes: HMRC Plans to Expand Crypto Asset Information Retrieval Powers, Raising Privacy Concerns]
According to a report by Jinse Finance on October 8, Forbes stated that the UK's HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is pushing to expand its investigative powers regarding crypto asset information. The proposal would allow tax authorities to directly retrieve customer data from crypto asset service providers and update rules for inspecting software and electronic records. UK crypto tax software company Recap has warned that the proposed regulations define service providers too broadly, potentially encompassing non-custodial wallet software, blockchain explorers, hardware wallet manufacturers, and tax software providers. Given the public and transparent nature of Bitcoin transaction records, if investors' names, addresses, and tax identities are linked to on-chain wallet addresses, it could expose their long-term asset activity records, increasing risks of data breaches, extortion, and even physical attacks.
