Jin10 Data, October 8 – As the Bank of Japan accelerates its pace of policy adjustments, the Tokyo Financial Exchange will launch a new futures contract this month—futures contracts linked to the Bank of Japan's overnight unsecured call rate. This will enable traders to position themselves for interest rate changes between two central bank policy meetings and hedge against risks arising from increased interest rate volatility. The exchange stated that the existing three-month TONA (Tokyo Overnight Average Rate) futures contracts have failed to meet traders' needs. Traders are seeking tools to hedge against the constantly shifting interest rate expectations driven by the Bank of Japan's policy decisions at each meeting. The Director of the Wholesale Business Department at the Tokyo Financial Exchange commented: "Recent interest rate fluctuations have become more active, and demand for derivatives trading is also increasing." Although the market expects the Bank of Japan to continue raising interest rates, the trading volume of three-month TONA futures has declined in recent months, with September's trading volume down nearly 50% compared to the same period last year.
