[Europol Warns: Crypto Wallets Are Key Risk Points for Quantum Attacks, Recommends Proactive Quantum-Resistant Migration] BlockBeats News, October 7: Europol released two reports urging the crypto industry and policymakers to prepare in advance for the threats posed by quantum computing. Its European Cybercrime Centre highlighted that crypto wallets are the primary risk point for quantum threats: sufficiently powerful quantum computers could derive private keys from exposed public keys, enabling unauthorized asset transfers. In contrast, the hash functions that link blocks and support mining still largely retain quantum-resistant capabilities. The report stated that cryptocurrencies will not collapse due to quantum computing but recommended a phased migration to quantum-resistant cryptographic systems, along with improvements in wallet security and key management. For wallets with public keys already exposed on-chain, the report advised migrating funds before an attack occurs. The report also noted that standardized post-quantum signatures are 10 to 120 times larger than Bitcoin's current ECDSA signatures, which could increase block space pressure, raise transaction fees, and slow down confirmations. Another report focused on the "harvest now, decrypt later" risk, where attackers collect encrypted data now to decrypt it once quantum technology matures. Currently, there is no clear evidence that this method has been systematically or widely exploited, but government communications and corporate confidential data are considered the most likely targets.
