[G7 Announces Release of 100 Million Barrels of Strategic Oil, Europe Refuses to Increase Reserves]
According to a report by Golden Finance on October 7, citing a Bloomberg report based on an internal EU meeting memo, EU member states generally believe that the G7's announcement last week to coordinate the release of 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel does not imply that Europe needs to make large-scale use of its strategic reserves beyond existing commitments. The EU prefers to limit subsequent release volumes to the quotas agreed upon in March of this year, meaning there may be a significant discrepancy between the G7's stated '100 million barrels' and the actual additional supply in the future.
The G7 previously announced that, under the coordination of the International Energy Agency (IEA), a total of 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel would be released over the next four months, with a priority on releasing diesel significantly in advance during the first 20 days. However, no EU member state has explicitly committed to increasing reserves within this timeframe.
In March of this year, IEA member countries reached an agreement to release approximately 400 million barrels, with EU countries collectively responsible for about 20% of the total. As of early October, about two-thirds of the EU's allocated quota had already been released.
