**[Ghostty Author's New Terminal Rex Public Beta, Promises to Be Free Forever and Fully Self-Hosted]**
Beating AI News: Ghostty author and HashiCorp co-founder Mitchell Hashimoto's new company, Superlogical, has launched the public beta of Rex. It is positioned as a direct replacement for existing terminals, with a focus on long-term sessions and remote connections. Tasks can continue running even after the terminal is closed, and users can resume operations by reopening it or switching to another device. Previously, Rex underwent a private beta with around 50 participants. The first round of public beta is limited to macOS, with invitations being distributed in batches based on a waitlist.
Rex saves terminal sessions in the background, eliminating the need for the client window to remain open. The macOS app itself can save local sessions and also connect to Rex instances on other machines. It offers CLI, Lua, and server APIs, enabling users to create sessions, split screens, launch programs, read terminal content, and control the terminal directly via scripts.
Superlogical has explicitly promised that Rex will always remain free, with no direct charges for the client or server. Users do not need to create accounts and can fully self-host. The company states it will not view or share user data. Linux and Windows servers are already operational, while iOS, Linux, and Windows clients are under development but not included in this round of testing. Superlogical has not yet disclosed specific commercialization plans, which will be clarified before the official release. [Original Link]
