🐋 WHALE WATCH : Nine L2s are shipping major upgrades in Q4 2026. One is shutting down. Heres where each stands.
ARB Integrating ZK proofs for a multi proof settlement model that cuts L1 settlement from days to hours. A 92.65M ARB unlock lands October 16 alongside a planned shift from Timeboost to Priority Gas Auctions.
OP Upgrade 20 (Super Root) moves the fault proof system to Super Root dispute games ahead of Superchain interoperability building on the earlier shift to 200ms subblocks and the Karst hard fork.
Base Activated its Cobalt upgrade October 1 introducing Validity Transactions and expanding the B20 token standard. Roadmap targets 200ms block times down from 2 seconds incorporating EVM improvements from Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade.
ZK Rolling out an EraVM security upgrade extending execution delay to 24 hours and developing a second prover. A 173.4M token unlock 0.8% of supply lands October 17.
STRK Activated v0.14.4 on mainnet October 5 enabling block sized proofs up to 1.1B L2 gas. Decentralized validator staking planned for Q4. A -127M token unlock -$7.4M lands October 15.
POL Activated PIP-92 October 1 raising staking rewards from roughly 3% to 7.7% annually. Gigagas roadmap targets 100000 TPS.
LINEA Beta v5.3 and v5.4 land in Q4 targeting finality under 30 minutes. Network transitions to a RISC V based proving architecture aligned with the Ethereum Foundation's roadmap.
SCR Completed its OpenVM v2.0.0 upgrade adopting the SWIRL proving system. Transitioning to a private, AI dedicated network over an expected 9-month window. SCR migrates to Ethereum mainnet as part of the shift.
MNT Migrating its DA layer from EigenDA to Ethereum Blobs for a true ZK Rollup transition. Moved its sequencer from Geth to Reth in September and migrated its bridge to Chainlink CCIP.
BLAST Announced full network closure due to unsustainable economics. Users need to withdraw all assets to Ethereum mainnet before October 26. Funds stay recoverable after that date through L1 bridge contracts only.
Blasts shutdown is the sharpest data point on this list. Every other L2 here is racing toward faster finality and ZK settlement. Blast ran the same race and couldnt fund it.
ARB and ZK both carry meaningful unlock pressure this month on top of their technical upgrades. That combination is worth watching closely.
