I welcomed representatives of the Jamaican Bar Association and the Advocates Association for an important discussion on the Firearms Act and the fight against violent crime.
I acknowledge the concerns raised by the legal fraternity, particularly around exceptional circumstances and the need to preserve fairness in the application of the law. These views will form part of the review of the legislation.
At the same time, we must continue to remove illegal guns from our communities and protect Jamaicans from gun violence. Guns have caused deep pain in too many families, and I have seen this pain personally in my own constituency.
We believe in justice, forgiveness and second chances. Our responsibility is to ensure that the law protects innocent people, holds those who use illegal firearms to account and helps to keep Jamaica safe.
The conversation will continue through the established review process, with the aim of refining the legislation while protecting the lives and rights of Jamaicans.
