Today, on the sidelines of the Khazanah Megatrends Forum 2026, I discussed the current global state of play with distinguished figures from the worlds of technology and academia. With Dato' Fong Swee Kiang, a Bukit Mertajam native, and a leading player in the semiconductor industry, we were on the same page about the need for Malaysia to move beyond traditional manufacturing and strengthen our capabilities in high-end technology, particularly AI super-cycle. I also had a stimulating exchange with Professor Charles O'Reilly and Professor Stephen Kotkin. We examined transformative change, and the imperative for institutions to move up their technological value chain. Our broader conversation also considered the evolving geopolitical and economic landscape, including great power rivalry, and what these shifts mean for Malaysia. I stressed that technological advancement and economic progress must go hand in hand with good governance and strong institutions.
