[U.S. Digital Asset Holders Must Submit 2025 Federal Tax Returns by October 15, 2026] Foresight News reports, citing crowdfundinside, that U.S. digital asset holders who applied for an extension earlier this year must submit their 2025 federal tax returns by October 15, 2026. This date marks the automatic six-month extension deadline granted after filing Form 4868 before the spring deadline. The extension only applies to filing, as any owed taxes must still be estimated and paid by April 2026. Interest and penalties on unpaid balances have already been accruing. Brokers have begun reporting 2025 transactions using Form 1099-DA, allowing taxpayers to verify income amounts, though cost basis information may still be incomplete. In mid-September, the Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act with a vote of 49-50, falling short of the 60 votes needed to proceed. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) stated they will continue to develop rules on trading, custody, and related issues rather than waiting for Congress. Late filing penalties start at 5% of unpaid taxes per month, capped at 25%, with a minimum penalty applying after 60 days.
