Latest Fed Official Remarks — Goolsbee, 2026 Non-Voting Member
Chicago Fed President and 2026 non-voting FOMC member Goolsbee commented after the release of U.S. employment data, noting that only 29,000 jobs were added in September. However, he believes the overall labor market remains stable.
One reason is that 485,000 people re-entered the labor force, and while the unemployment rate rose from 4.1% to 4.2%, it doesn’t indicate that companies are engaging in large-scale layoffs.
His bigger concern right now is still inflation. When asked whether the Fed should continue raising rates in October or pause, Goolsbee said both options are possible. He hopes to see more data to confirm that inflation is moving closer to the 2% target.
Although Goolsbee is not a voting member, he represents the views of some Fed officials. While there’s a slight dip in the labor market, the overall employment situation in the U.S. is still decent. Compared to potentially rising inflation, inflation might be the bigger issue.
September’s inflation data will be released at 8:30 PM Beijing time on September 14. As of now, the Cleveland Fed’s forecast predicts a 0.2% increase.
