[U.S. Bipartisan Senators Propose AI Accountability Legislation, Requiring Companies to Bear Responsibility for Intelligent Agent Intrusions]
BlockBeats News, October 1 — U.S. Republican Senator Josh Hawley and Democratic Senator Chris Murphy plan to introduce artificial intelligence accountability legislation. Although former President Trump has made it very clear that his administration's stance was that the industry should self-regulate, an increasing number of Republicans believe new laws are necessary.
According to Axios, the 'AI Accountability Act' will seek to hold companies criminally and civilly liable for hacking incidents. These senators argue that current laws leave too much uncertainty regarding who should be held accountable when AI agents infiltrate systems. This approach stands in stark contrast to government officials, who claim that existing laws can address harms caused by AI.
U.S. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton stated on Wednesday: 'As the President has pointed out, we have consumer protection laws. We have product liability laws.' Clayton added: 'We have the Department of Justice. We have frameworks for addressing developments in verticals like transportation, energy, and financial services.' Trump considers Clayton a strong candidate to oversee AI-related matters.
