[NVIDIA, Meta, and Other AI Giants Question Anthropic's 'Excessive Warnings']
According to a report by Jinse Finance on October 1, citing The Wall Street Journal, divisions within the industry regarding AI risks and regulatory approaches have surfaced following the White House's push for major U.S. AI companies to sign a statement on AI safety principles. Sources revealed that NVIDIA (NVDA.O) CEO Jensen Huang and other tech executives questioned Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei during the White House event about why he had previously publicly emphasized risks associated with AI models, such as cyberattacks and mass unemployment, arguing that his statements were overly alarmist. Amodei responded that the industry needs to truthfully inform the public about the capabilities and potential risks of AI models rather than downplaying the issues.
This discussion took place during a meeting between former President Trump and executives from approximately a dozen AI companies, aimed at promoting the establishment of self-regulatory mechanisms within the industry. Anthropic has long advocated for stricter safety measures and has criticized some companies and governments for underestimating AI risks. Meanwhile, executives from companies like NVIDIA and Meta Platforms (META.O), including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, have supported a more industry-driven, self-regulatory approach to accelerate AI development.
Previously, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google had considered establishing an AI regulatory body similar to self-regulatory organizations in the financial industry. However, the proposal was ultimately abandoned due to concerns from Huang, Zuckerberg, and SpaceX (SPCX.O) CEO Elon Musk that such a mechanism could concentrate more power in the hands of leading AI companies.
