The narrative of "no one will reward a bully" was completely violated by the recent Greenland agreement. As recently as a couple months ago there were EU people seriously remarking that the US might invade Greenland or start a conflict with the EU over the territory. Ultimately the US got everything it wanted from the new Greenland deal without needing to own nor conquer it because the EU side backed down. This after they made a ton of noise about never giving Trump an inch. I have been one of the most vociferous critics of Trump since the election but I at least have the capacity to recognize when a deal works in its favor despite all expectations to the contrary. What I don't see being unpacked by anyone is why the Europeans chose to capitulate. What were they told, what did they fear, or what did they learn, that changed their minds? Why was the bully rewarded?
