The trial is anticipated to last about four weeks, and if convicted on the fraud charge alone, he could face a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. In December 2022, several men—some reportedly victims of the alleged scheme—were accused of kidnapping and torturing Pleterski for three days, threatening his and his family's safety, and forcing him to record a video confessing his role in the alleged fraud. Pleterski is one of many prominent figures in the cryptocurrency industry to face criminal charges during the market downturn of 2022. Executives from the now-bankrupt FTX and Celsius have also faced charges in the United States since then.
