[The South Korean Financial Services Commission is Considering Introducing a Virtual Asset Market Maker System]
According to a report by Digital Asset, Yoo Yong-joon, the Digital Finance Policy Officer of the South Korean Financial Services Commission (FSC), stated that they are considering introducing a market maker system for the virtual asset market to enhance market efficiency and stability. Although the current 'Virtual Asset User Protection Act' prohibits market-making activities, this move indicates that the FSC intends to revisit and consider introducing this mechanism during the second phase of the legislative process. Yoo Yong-joon also mentioned that exchanges must possess sufficient capital and operational capabilities, and core functions (such as order execution, trading support, and abnormal transaction monitoring) may shift from self-regulation to public regulation. Governance rules related to major shareholders and management are expected to be strengthened. Once the legislation is implemented, it is anticipated to promote industry diversification, the establishment of a trustworthy trading environment, a digital asset issuance and disclosure system, Korean won-based stablecoins, and enhanced user protection.
