A lot of people are asking why THORChain didn’t help freeze the stolen $BTC and $ETH this time. Here’s the reason: it’s technically impossible.
Why did THORChain freeze things when they got hacked last time?
Let me explain. THORChain can only shut down the entire network. Last time, when there was an issue with the protocol, they shut down the network to fix the vulnerability first. During that time, the entire TC network was unusable. If those funds had already been moved to the $ETH or $BTC chains, THORChain wouldn’t have been able to do anything unless the funds were still in the vault.
To put it simply: THORChain can shut down the whole network, but it can’t freeze a specific $ETH or $BTC address. It’s just not technically possible. Even if the protocol is shut down, hackers can’t use THORChain’s services, but it doesn’t really help much—they can still use other protocols or methods to launder the funds.
