If privacy transactions similar to Zcash can be implemented on the BTC chain, in the long run, it could negatively impact the narrative around ZEC as a privacy coin. However, in the short and medium term, there’s no need to worry—after all, it will take quite some time to materialize.
Here’s the breakdown:
The tweet references a paper published by the research team Alloc Init, focusing on 'Privacy BTC.' The goal is to enable Zcash-like privacy transactions on Bitcoin’s Layer 1, claiming it doesn’t require changes to Bitcoin’s consensus or a soft fork.
The general approach is:
1. Deposit regular BTC to convert it into an encrypted “note”;
2. Use zero-knowledge proofs during transactions: on-chain, it only proves that “this note is valid/not double-spent” without revealing the sender, receiver, or amount;
3. When needed, withdraw it back into regular BTC.
From this mechanism, it’s essentially similar to Zcash’s model: encrypted notes + nullifiers + ZK proofs.
The main difference is that it doesn’t create a separate chain. Instead, the proofs are directly anchored to Bitcoin, with independent indexers used for verification.
The paper also acknowledges some significant challenges:
1. The peg-in/peg-out mechanism isn’t complete yet;
2. Privacy isn’t fully guaranteed during deposits and withdrawals—on-chain analysis could still link transactions;
3. The new pool is just starting, so the anonymity set is very small. Factors like time, amount, fees, and known counterparties could still expose users.
In short, it’s still an early-stage concept and not a mature product yet.
Impact on ZEC:
If successfully implemented, and privacy transactions on BTC become relatively seamless, some users might no longer need to switch to ZEC, leading to a loss of some users. More importantly, the narrative could shift—positioning ZEC as a “privacy BTC alternative” would become harder, diluting its unique story.
That said, in the short and medium term, it’s not a big issue:
Zcash is already operational, with a mature shielded pool, an ETF, institutional funding, and its own upgrades like NU7 (faster block times). ZEC also has its own dedicated user base.
Short and medium term, no major concerns. Long term, it’s worth keeping an eye on how this develops.
