The crypto world has seen quite a few exchanges get hacked over the years. But if you look at the bigger picture, I think Coinbase has a frequently overlooked advantage: it might be the longest-running exchange that hasn’t been hacked. The most important thing for everyone is whether your money can stay safe there over time. Since 2012, Coinbase has weathered events like Mt.Gox, FTX, Luna, 3AC, and countless hacking incidents, big and small. During this time, Coinbase itself has faced account thefts, social engineering attacks, and data security issues. But up until now, I haven’t seen its core trading system or platform wallet suffer from large-scale customer asset theft due to hacking, like what’s happened elsewhere in the industry. Not even once—and that’s incredibly rare. The larger the exchange and the more assets it holds, the more it becomes a prime target for hackers over the long term. For Coinbase to maintain this level of security for over a decade, I think it boils down to a few tried-and-true factors: Cold storage, strict internal access controls, compliance systems, and the auditing and regulatory requirements that come with being a publicly listed company in the U.S. During bull markets, people might not pay much attention to these things. But every time the industry faces a major crisis, it becomes clear: The most valuable feature of an exchange might not be how many promotions it offers, but whether your money is still there ten years later. That’s why I now view Coinbase more as a long-term account rather than just a simple trading platform. Recently, Coinbase has also improved its experience for Chinese-speaking users, and I’ve been using it myself.
