[Sources: The Federal Reserve Plans to Raise Bank Regulatory Thresholds]
Four informed sources revealed that the Federal Reserve is drafting a plan to raise the asset thresholds that trigger stricter regulatory measures for large banks. This move would exempt certain lending institutions from bearing costly additional regulatory burdens and could potentially drive industry consolidation.
According to the sources, the Federal Reserve is expected to soon propose adjustments to the thresholds for banks subject to stress tests on balance sheets, liquidity, capital, and other stricter regulatory rules, reflecting factors such as inflation and economic growth. Three of the sources indicated that the Fed is likely to present these adjustment proposals later this year.
Under current rules, regulatory requirements become more stringent when a bank's asset size reaches $100 billion; at $250 billion and $700 billion, the regulatory requirements are further elevated.
