Can users get their money back if a CEX gets hacked?
Biget lost $350M to hackers, but they have a $460M protection fund. I quickly looked into the insurance amounts and mechanisms of other exchanges:
Binance: $1.27B self-insurance (BTC reserves, verifiable on-chain)
OKX: SAFU fund size unknown, but for European users, individual accounts are insured up to €500K
Gate: $500M self-insurance (shown on their website, on-chain address not disclosed)
Coinbase: $320M commercial insurance, disclosed in SEC filings
HashKey: 100% insurance coverage for hot wallet assets, at least 50% for cold wallets, backed by third-party insurance
Summary: After a CEX hack, the safety of user assets depends on:
1️⃣ The platform's willingness to compensate
2️⃣ The size of the platform's self-insurance fund
3️⃣ The payout capacity and limits of third-party insurance
