According to Wu Blockchain, Bitget CEO Gracy Chen mentioned during a livestream that the identity of the attacker cannot be fully confirmed yet. However, some IPs highly match the VPN characteristics used by a North Korean-related group. The attackers demonstrated professional techniques and may have been monitoring Bitget for a long time. The affected assets primarily came from a hot wallet, while a wallet resembling a cold wallet was actually a warm wallet. The cold wallet remains unaffected.
She stated that Bitget’s protection fund of over $465 million is sufficient to cover the losses, and the platform also has over $1 billion in self-owned funds. Withdrawal suspension may last for several hours to one or two days. Gracy emphasized that Bitget is “definitely not another FTX” and is capable of handling concentrated withdrawals after resuming operations. Bitget’s retail business scale is comparable to Bybit’s, and if Bybit can withstand a $1.5 billion loss, Bitget can handle losses exceeding $300 million.
