Today, I chaired the Economic Development and Growth Committee of Cabinet as we reviewed the Government’s divestment policy and other measures to support Jamaica’s economic recovery following Hurricane Melissa. Melissa did more than damage homes and infrastructure. It disrupted businesses, agriculture, tourism and other parts of our productive economy. We therefore have to be deliberate about how we respond and how quickly we can get economic activity moving again. We are looking at how we can improve the efficiency of Government, bring forward investments, review fiscal incentives and speed up approvals for projects that are ready to move. When investment moves, it creates jobs and income, supports businesses and helps to build momentum for recovery.
