According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Commerce, as of July this year, seasonally adjusted private data center construction spending has reached $37 billion, an increase of approximately $9 billion compared to the same period last year. In the first seven months of this year, private construction spending, excluding projects such as houses, apartment buildings, shopping malls, and others, was about $46 billion lower than the same period last year. Hyperscale data centers have consumed a significant amount of scarce labor and electricity, driving up costs for other businesses. A recent report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond stated that data center construction is exacerbating local labor shortages. Last year, the state of Mississippi participated in a bid for an aluminum smelter, which was expected to provide about 1,000 permanent jobs. However, according to a source familiar with the matter, near one of the proposed plant sites in Vicksburg, a data center announced its construction, which would consume the electricity needed for the smelter. As a result, the smelter ultimately chose Oklahoma.
