He mentioned that AI safety cannot rely solely on one or two model companies. While model enterprises like OpenAI and Anthropic are critical, software companies responsible for controlling AI agents and monitoring their behavior are equally important. Smith noted that Microsoft has participated in AI safety assessments through the safety committee jointly established with its partner OpenAI and supports the implementation of manual shutdown mechanisms for advanced AI systems. He believes that AI safety requires a multi-layered defense system, and critical control should not be centralized in one place. Additionally, Smith stated that Microsoft still plans to proceed with its previous initiative to utilize 200 megawatts of computing power at an AI data center in the UAE and believes that now remains an opportune time to invest in the Middle East. Regarding Microsoft's goal of achieving carbon-negative emissions by 2030, he mentioned that the company might need to adjust the previously established path.
