According to Bitcoin Magazine, research teams from East Texas A&M University, North American University, and Florida Gulf Coast University have published a paper proposing a post-quantum security solution for Bitcoin's Lightning Network called 'PQLN.'
The paper points out that even if Bitcoin's mainnet undergoes a quantum-resistant consensus upgrade in the future, it won't directly cover the off-chain transmission layer of the Lightning Network. Currently, attackers can already record encrypted network traffic and wait for the emergence of quantum computers to carry out 'steal now, decrypt later' attacks.
To address this, PQLN introduces hybrid post-quantum protections using lattice-based cryptographic algorithms ML-DSA and ML-KEM, standardized by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). These protections are applied to the Lightning Network's gossip protocol, transport handshake, payment onion routing, and invoices.
The team successfully implemented and validated the solution in the mainstream Rust-Lightning framework, with the additional cryptographic computation overhead kept under 0.33 milliseconds. This allows the Lightning Network to establish quantum-resistant barriers ahead of Bitcoin's L1 upgrade.
