Looks like Circle and Binance are teaming up for some major moves.
Binance spent $100 million in a private placement to acquire approximately 1.24 million Class A shares of Circle at a price of $80.84 per share, about 5% below market price. The deal closed on 9/17. The shares are locked for up to two years, but voting rights remain intact.
On the same day, their existing USDC partnership was upgraded to a five-year term: Circle will provide Binance monthly incentives based on the USDC held in Modular Smart Contract Wallets, while Binance will promote USDC on its platform, especially in emerging markets. This essentially ties the token issuer’s traffic-buying strategy to the exchange’s equity stake in the issuer.
The stablecoin wars have reached this level—it's no longer about slogans, but about distribution channels + aligning balance sheets. Binance wants a compliant digital dollar as the foundation for super-apps, while Circle wants access to the world’s largest traffic gateway.
The two-year lock-up shows neither side is playing short-term games. Moving forward, we might see more frequent USDC trading pairs, financial products, and promotions on Binance—after all, incentives flow where the funds are.
