In April of 2013, the Counter-Strike anti cheat software began mining bitcoin on player’s graphics cards. About 14,000 gaming computers ran the bitcoin mining code for two weeks without players knowing. A staff member had slipped the miner in after an internal test was cancelled. The operation produced roughly 30 bitcoin. Players noticed 90% GPU usage while idle and cards running hot enough to fail. The company later settled with New Jersey for $1 million and donated the mined coins plus a matching amount to charity.
