[Solana Reduces Target Block Time to 250ms, Third Acceleration Phase Implemented] According to a report by Decrypt on September 21, as cited by Jinse Finance, Solana reduced its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds on September 18, marking the third acceleration since August. This adjustment has increased block production speed by nearly 17%. However, since the computation and data capacity per slot are proportionally reduced, the overall network throughput has not increased. This adjustment is part of the third phase of the SIMD-0525 proposal's four-phase plan. The slot time has been reduced from the genesis time of 400 milliseconds to 350, 300, and now 250 milliseconds. The final step to reduce it to 200 milliseconds does not yet have a mainnet activation date, as it depends on validators maintaining a stable skip rate. Due to the shortened slot time, the window for validators to produce consecutive blocks has been reduced from 1.2 seconds to 1 second. The epoch duration, fixed at 432,000 slots, has been compressed from approximately 36 hours to about 30 hours, accelerating staking rewards and validator scheduling accordingly. The report notes that applications sensitive to data freshness, such as oracles and automated market makers, will be the first to benefit.
