[Wall Street Expects Short-Term U.S. Debt Issuance to Reach $1 Trillion]
According to the Financial Times, Wall Street banks anticipate that the U.S. will borrow approximately $1 trillion through the issuance of short-term Treasury bonds over the next year to meet the growing government financing needs. Bank of America estimates that in the new fiscal year ending September 2027, the U.S. will incur approximately $1.07 trillion in new borrowing, excluding repayments of maturing debt. JPMorgan forecasts short-term Treasury issuance for 2027 to be around $1.09 trillion, while Goldman Sachs estimates $961 billion. The increase in short-term debt issuance comes as U.S. long-term borrowing costs have risen to their highest levels since 2007. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant had previously expressed hopes to lower long-term interest rates by expanding buybacks of 10- to 30-year Treasury bonds.
