Health officials in Congo are using anonymized mobile phone data from Vodacom, provided free by the carrier, to predict where Ebola will spread next.
The number that should make people pay attention is 10 out of 10. In June, this system flagged the ten highest risk destinations for the virus to travel to next, and every single one had confirmed cases by the end of the month. That's not a marginal improvement on guesswork, that's a tool that worked essentially every time it was tested, in the middle of a live outbreak where getting it wrong costs lives. It matters more here than it would in most outbreaks, because this strain, Bundibugyo, has no approved vaccine or treatment, which means the usual playbook of ring vaccinating around confirmed cases isn't available.
A method this accurate on partial data is exactly the kind of tool worth expanding fast, not something to quietly celebrate and leave as is.
