[Wall Street Journal: Lagarde intervened to block Binance from obtaining EU MiCA license in Greece]
According to the Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde intervened in Binance's application process for a Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) license in Greece and requested Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis not to approve the application. Once approved, the license could cover EU member states through the 'passporting mechanism.' The report states that Greek regulators had previously informed the European Securities and Markets Authority of their intention to approve the application, but Binance withdrew the application in mid-June before regulators made a formal decision. Lagarde is reportedly concerned about Binance's past compliance issues and its potential to further expand the dominance of dollar-backed stablecoins in Europe, which could impact the advancement of the digital euro.
