[Relying on AI to Detect Vulnerabilities Early is Not a Sustainable Security Strategy, Bitcoin Core Developer Niklas Gögge Warns]
Odaily Planet Daily reports that Bitcoin News posted on the X platform stating that Bitcoin Core developer Niklas Gögge has warned that recent AI-driven vulnerability scanning is reshaping Bitcoin's security landscape. Large language models have significantly reduced the cost of discovering vulnerabilities, with attackers potentially needing only a few hundred dollars in computational costs to uncover catastrophic vulnerabilities.
Regarding Bitcoin Core, Project Loupe, Bitcoin Red Team, and individual contributors have generated over 1,000 reports, but no critical or severe vulnerabilities have been identified so far. Gögge emphasized that relying on stronger models to discover vulnerabilities before attackers is not a sustainable security strategy. Developers should focus on building testing infrastructures that can proactively prevent entire classes of vulnerabilities through automated testing, fuzz testing, and property-based testing.
Key components of Bitcoin Core have cumulatively undergone over 100 years of CPU fuzz testing and decades of Bitcoin node network simulations.
