The Fed went ahead with a 25 basis point rate hike today, the first in 2023, raising rates to 3.75%–4%, despite opposition from the President. Just hours later, President Trump took to Truth Social, firing off all-caps posts: BY FAR, BOOMING, LOSS, AND FAST. However, he didn’t call out the new Chair, Walsh, by name. This suggests the pressure is aimed at the collective decision-making of the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) and market expectations, rather than putting his own appointee in an awkward position. President Trump has always maintained that the U.S., as the world’s most creditworthy economy, shouldn’t punish itself with high interest rates. He also pointed out that if the U.S. stopped trading with all countries it has a trade deficit with, it could make at least $1.5 trillion a year. After all, the word 'deficit' is just a fancy way of saying 'loss.'
