Deep Tide TechFlow reports that on September 17, according to Jintou Data, the Federal Reserve unanimously approved a 25 basis point rate hike during its September policy meeting, stating that this move will support inflation returning to target more promptly. The 2026 dot plot was significantly revised upward, with 16 officials projecting the need for additional rate hikes this year. The median rate indicates one more rate hike is expected this year. Waller stated that inflation remains too high and persistent, and this action removes some accommodation. He emphasized the economy's resilience and declined to provide forward guidance.
In the markets, the hawkish stance pushed the U.S. 2-year Treasury yield significantly higher, with the 10-year yield climbing back above 5%. Rate futures pricing for this year's rate hikes increased by 6 basis points. Spot gold fell more than $100 from its daily high, and the U.S. dollar broke through the 100 mark. U.S. retail sales for August recorded a month-on-month increase of 1.2%, the highest since March this year. Meanwhile, the Turkish stock market dropped 6% intraday, triggering a circuit breaker.
In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia plans to restore half of its oil pipeline capacity within days, while crude oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz reached 18 million barrels per day yesterday.
