The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) will roll out its new crypto regulatory framework in October 2027, but commercial banks in the UK will still not be required to lift the blanket payment restrictions on cryptocurrency exchanges. Despite the UK government's long-standing efforts to establish itself as a global hub for digital assets and pressure banks to ease restrictions, nine out of the top ten retail banks in the UK currently maintain strict blockades or limits on crypto-related transactions.
While the FCA hopes that banks will voluntarily avoid imposing outright bans as more robust regulatory safeguards are implemented, the policy will grant the banking sector autonomy in execution and will not enforce changes through administrative orders.
