[Bank of Korea Warns: AI Proliferation May Widen Labor Market Gap Between Capital and Non-Capital Regions]
Deep Tide TechFlow reports that on September 15, according to Yonhap News Agency, the Bank of Korea released an analysis report at the 'Regional Economic Seminar' held in Daejeon. The report pointed out that the proliferation of AI technology could further widen the labor market gap between regions in South Korea.
The report categorizes AI into three types: generative, agent-based, and physical. Analysis shows that new job opportunities in occupations highly exposed to generative and agent-based AI are heavily concentrated in the capital region. Over the past three years since 2023, 247,000 new jobs in occupations highly exposed to generative AI were created, with 80.8% of them located in the capital region. Similarly, 105,000 new jobs in occupations highly exposed to agent-based AI were created last year, with the capital region accounting for a staggering 88.3%.
The Bank of Korea warned that if AI investment continues to concentrate in the capital region, the regional imbalance in knowledge service industries and semiconductor manufacturing will further intensify, while employment in manufacturing, transportation, and food service industries in non-capital regions may significantly decline.
Bank of Korea Governor Rhee Chang-yong emphasized that whether AI can become a new growth driver for regional economies depends not on the speed of technology adoption but on how regional economies are redesigned to maximize AI productivity.
