[Poland Attempted to Purchase Venezuelan Oil with USDT, Resulting in Over $200 Million in Losses] According to a report by Jinse Finance, on September 15, the Financial Times published an investigative report revealing that Polish state-owned oil refiner Orlen attempted to use the cryptocurrency USDT to purchase 6 million barrels of crude oil from Venezuela at the end of 2023. The company prepaid approximately $230 million to three intermediaries in Dubai, converting the funds into USDT, which was then handed over to intermediaries in Caracas in the form of a USB drive. However, only $28.8 million worth of oil was delivered to Poland, while the majority of the $240 million prepayment, after being converted into USDT, disappeared. Additionally, significant demurrage fees were incurred due to the chartered supertanker remaining idle off the coast of Venezuela. Ultimately, the Orlen Group faced a total financial impairment loss of approximately $400 million, marking a major scandal in Poland's energy sector.
