[The Bank for International Settlements Expresses Concern Over Leverage Issues Following Situational Awareness Emergency Event]
According to Bloomberg, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has warned that central banks and investors must address potential vulnerabilities, citing the increased use of leverage in multiple markets that could amplify general market volatility. The near-collapse of the Situational Awareness fund in July was highlighted as a cautionary example. Gaston Gelos, BIS's Head of Financial Stability Policy, stated that hedge funds are now at the 'core of core markets,' creating a fragile situation reliant on high leverage and liquidity. While liquidity is abundant during good times, it can quickly vanish. Frank Smets, BIS's Head of Economic Analysis and Statistics, acknowledged that market stress has not yet materialized but emphasized that this should not lead to complacency, as the sustainability of risk asset resilience remains uncertain.
