Pre Market Thoughts - 14 Sep 26 Asia semis took an initial leg down with KOSPI and NKY both down for the day thus far. KOSPI is down about 3% on the day, dragged down by $00660 (down 6%ish) to the 1.7m KRW support levels. This week is also shaping up to be an eventful week. We have FOMC in the middle, the fate of Clarity act and also the labs dropping news of their collaboration/collusion over the weekend. Lets unpack each of them. First, on the labs collaborating to "slow down" for safety. I dont see a read through into capex reduction. Anthropic has signaled a tripling of its compute commitments to 517B from 180B. Instead, this is the labs trying to shift away from training workloads into inference workloads (which they can monetize). Alongside, on FOMC - the bank consensus is for a hike. What becomes important is whether this is a once and done hike or the start of a "hiking cycle". I personally think that aside from semis, there are very few sectors that would be able to endure tighter financial conditions. On the clarity act passage and crypto - i dont have a read on this. However, i think this is more impactful for the majors. Should clarity fail to pass, i also foresee regulators giving guidance which should ameliorate the situation of failing to pass. My game plan for this week would be to bid any dips on semis before FOMC. I think the mainstream read on the "slowdown" is bearish for semis is totally wrong. If anything, it shores up the monetization for the labs and is very bullish for the entire sector. On crypto, same opinion as before. More importantly, Open source AI is a theme that i think is critical. I would rank it alongside privacy in terms of the secular tailwinds for the theme.
