After the futures market opened at 4 PM on Sunday, both crypto and stocks took a dive, mainly due to rising oil prices.
Over the weekend, a new ship attack incident occurred, escalating tensions. It has now been confirmed that the situation has upgraded from 'unknown damage' to a fire with crew evacuation.
However, there’s still no information on the ship’s name, type, flag state, direction of travel, load status (empty/full), or cargo details. There’s also no confirmation of crew casualties, oil spills, or total ship loss. So, it’s impossible to determine whether it’s an oil tanker/LNG ship or to calculate the loss in barrels.
In terms of assessment, this increases risks related to crew safety, war insurance, and shipowners refusing to sail, which is more severe than a simple 'hull hit with unknown damage.' However, it still doesn’t serve as new evidence for changes in strait traffic or export volumes.
For the market, this update adds to the risk of a gap down at the start of the week, but whether it leads to a sustained trend depends on whether shipowners further suspend operations, near-month premiums rise, and war insurance for tankers increases simultaneously. A single ship catching fire isn’t enough to negate the judgment of oil prices pulling back after a potential peak.
