Holy crap, this fly has been going wild in the AI community lately: 166,700 neurons, already playing Doom, Mario, and trading $BTC Recently, my feed on X has been flooded with a 'fly' gaming, trading crypto, and running around in Minecraft. Of course, it’s not a real fly, but a digital neural system reconstructed based on the actual neural wiring of a fruit fly. In September, teams from Google Research, HHMI Janelia, and Cambridge officially published the MaleCNS study, bringing the previously released complete central nervous system connectome of a male fruit fly into the spotlight. The most commonly used simulation in the community right now retains about 166,700 neurons, 25.6 million directed connections, and roughly 124 million synaptic contacts. And then the AI community went absolutely nuts. Someone fed Doom visuals into the fruit fly’s visual neurons and read outputs from its descending neurons to control movement, turning, and shooting. Someone else hooked it up to Super Mario 64 and Minecraft. And then there’s the person who turned $BTC candlestick charts into visual inputs, letting the fly output buy, sell, or hold signals. Profits stimulate PAM11 dopamine cells, while losses stimulate PPL101. It’s even capable of placing real orders on Coinbase accounts now. At this rate, is the next step training other brain neurons and making them available for everyone to use? https://(x.com)/nickwalton00/status/2098301053372621070/video/1
