Quantum computing cracking BTC? At least for now, we’re far from any kind of 'countdown.' But a recent computational challenge targeting elliptic curve cryptography has indeed made rapid progress. Looking at the Spacetime Score in the chart, the score was over 10 billion when the challenge began. Now, the Best Score has dropped to around 1.137 billion, which is 62% lower than Google’s previous classified circuit benchmark. Here’s where it’s easy to misunderstand: A 62% reduction doesn’t mean '62% of BTC has been cracked.' This challenge is about optimizing a critical computational step in quantum attacks. The decreasing score shows researchers are finding more efficient methods. However, to actually attack Bitcoin’s cryptographic system, we’d need quantum computers that are large-scale and error-correcting—today’s hardware is still far from meeting those requirements. So, the more realistic question at this stage is: how much time does Bitcoin have to upgrade its cryptographic system? Bitcoin isn’t software you can just update overnight. Wallets, nodes, exchanges, and custodians all need to migrate, and users would have to move their assets to new secure addresses. What’s even trickier is that some BTC, which hasn’t moved in years and may have lost private keys, won’t migrate on its own. This is why, even though quantum computing can’t crack BTC yet, related research has already started in advance. The real threat isn’t 'getting cracked tomorrow,' but rather the pace of technological progress outpacing the entire network’s ability to migrate in time.
