No amount of propaganda can erase the fact that the Social Health Authority (SHA) has stamped its mark in the delivery of universal healthcare in Kenya. Already, 33 million Kenyans are registered with SHA as opposed to only 8 million under the defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). Unlike NHIF, which largely covered people in employment, SHA covers all categories of the people of Kenya. SHA is also paying hospitals - from the dispensary to Level 6 hospitals - for the services they offer. And in line with the Facility Improvement Financing Act, the funds go to each hospital's account. Consequently, more Kenyans are now accessing medical attention, including primary healthcare, and experiencing the benefits of social health insurance.(William Samoei Ruto, PhD)
