The need for carbon-based lifeforms to personally step in is really becoming less and less frequent. This feeling has been especially strong lately. Starting from OpenAI’s announcement of new advancements in mathematics, and looking outward—mathematics, physics, biotechnology, materials science, robotics—every field is accelerating simultaneously. Things that used to require a team working for years, or even decades, to make progress are now seeing their research cycles crazily compressed. What’s even more noteworthy is that these fields are starting to “link up” with each other. Computing power aids research, models assist simulations, robots enter laboratories, high-throughput experiments generate more data, and new data, in turn, trains even stronger models. When one link speeds up, it pulls the subsequent links forward as well. That’s why I’ve always felt that the truly big changes in the next few years might far exceed most people’s expectations. In the past, we were used to understanding technological progress at the speed of the internet era: a product goes viral, a company rises, an industry gets reshaped. This wave feels more like a fundamental shift in underlying productivity. Research, engineering, manufacturing, medicine, energy—many industries might see their efficiency ceilings completely redefined.
