A fruit fly's neural network is now playing games, controlling robots, and trading Bitcoin? On September 3rd, Google, together with HHMI Janelia and other institutions, released MaleCNS 1.0, unveiling the central nervous system of an adult male fruit fly, featuring over 160,000 neurons and their connections. Since this neural connectivity map was made public, people have already hooked it up to Minecraft, Doom, Mario 64, and Beat Saber. Others have used it to control physical robots and virtual cars. Even crazier, there’s a project that connected the fruit fly’s neural system to an automated trading program to trade Bitcoin on Coinbase—and they even launched a meme coin!
