Japanese convenience store giant Lawson just did something big — for the first time globally, they’ve enabled POS cash registers to directly process stablecoin payments. No need for special terminals, no QR codes. Just scan the barcode from your mobile wallet on the register, and the payment is done. On August 6 and August 17, Lawson conducted experiments at two directly operated stores in Tokyo. On August 6, at the Takanawa Gateway store, they used the HashPort Wallet to settle payments with the yen-pegged stablecoin JPYC. On August 17, at the Shiba Tower store, they used MetaMask to settle payments with USDC, USDT, and JPYC. The entire process was facilitated by a licensed payment service provider offering a multi-code payment gateway, bypassing the need for dedicated payment terminals. Why is this a milestone? In the past, using stablecoins at Japanese convenience stores required a dedicated payment terminal or scanning a QR code — a cumbersome process. Now, by upgrading the POS machines to read barcodes directly from wallets, this marks a critical step toward making stablecoin payments as seamless as swiping a credit card. Japan has always had strict regulations on crypto assets, but things have clearly been accelerating this year. Lawson’s experiment is essentially testing whether crypto payments can become as simple as traditional card payments in the future. What does this mean if it works? It means you could use the USDC in your phone to buy an onigiri at a Japanese convenience store. This aligns with the same logic behind Duan Yongping’s investment in Circle — stablecoins are transitioning from being exchange-focused to entering the real world. Circle’s USDC has already become the benchmark for compliant USD stablecoins, and now even Japanese retail giants are testing its offline payment scenarios. The era of speculation is fading, and the era of payments is arriving. For entrepreneurs working on payments and Web3 infrastructure, the signal is clear: the offline adoption of compliant stablecoins is no longer just a concept — it’s happening. #Stablecoin #Lawson #JapanPayments #USDC #Web3
