[Victims of Crypto Scams Pursue Funds Across Borders but Clash with U.S. Law Enforcement Over 'Wallet Seizure']
According to The Wall Street Journal, after California resident Nivie Kaul fell victim to a crypto scam in 2022, losing over $8 million, she taught herself on-chain tracking. Upon discovering that part of the funds had flowed into Turkey and filing a lawsuit, a Turkish court ordered the seizure of a wallet in 2023 containing over $100 million in crypto assets, enough to cover her losses. However, before Turkish authorities could initiate the distribution process, U.S. law enforcement launched an operation called 'Big Tuna,' targeting a suspected scam hub in the Philippines. They took control of the wallet and other crypto assets totaling $225 million, creating new uncertainties over the final ownership of the seized funds and compensation for victims.
